12V 3A Power Supply (36W) for LED Strips and Cabinets
Updated 2026-11-01 · Shinechip engineering team
A 12V 3A power supply delivers 36W. Sized at 80%, it carries about 29W of LED strip — roughly 3 m of 9.6 W/m strip, or a two-shelf cabinet run. Above that, use a 5A model so the supply is not running at its limit.

How to choose
- 3A is the most common size for a kitchen cabinet run: 3-4 m of mid-power strip lands between 25W and 35W, which a 36W unit covers with a workable margin.
- The 36W rating applies at the output, not at the wall. Input range matters more than wattage when the site is on 110V or a generator — check the input column before ordering.
- Keep the cable run short or go up a size: 5 m of 0.5 mm2 at 3A drops about 1V, which is 8% of 12V and visible as dimming at the far end.
Frequently asked questions
How many watts is a 12V 3A power supply?
36W. Usable LED load after 20% headroom is about 29W.
Can it power 5 m of LED strip?
At 4.8 W/m, 5 m is 24W and fits. At 9.6 W/m, 5 m is 48W and needs a 5A (60W) supply, or a 24V strip at half the current.
Is 3A enough for a mirror with a defogger?
No. A defogger pad of 40-60W must be on its own circuit or a dedicated defogger output; the LED supply should carry only the strip and switch electronics.
